Taiwan Military’s Nighttime Drill Simulates Defense Against Airborne Assault on Songshan Airport

Taipei: Taiwan’s military carried out a nighttime drill on Wednesday to simulate a response to a potential Chinese attempt to seize Taipei Songshan Airport. This exercise was a key component of the ongoing Han Kuang military exercises, which are set to conclude on Friday.

According to Focus Taiwan, the exercise was conducted by the Third Theater Command, which is tasked with the defense of northern Taiwan. The drill simulated a heliborne assault, involving the airdrop of troops into the airport. Air Force, Military Police, and Marine Corps personnel participated in the defense, engaging the simulated enemy with air defense weapons and other munitions. Additionally, weapons systems stationed near Songshan Air Base were also utilized.

The exercise included the deployment of a smokescreen around the landing site to reduce enemy visibility. Marine Corps personnel simulated firing shoulder-launched FIM-92 Stinger missiles at the airborne threat. Defense forces then used a combination of armored vehicles, tactical vehicles, and artillery to gradually repel the simulated enemy with firepower.
