Taipei:Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) has firmly stated that Beijing holds no jurisdiction over the waters surrounding Taiwan, following claims by China's coast guard of conducting "routine law enforcement patrols" in the region.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Chinese coast guard announced on Saturday that a patrol flotilla, including the vessel "Hushi," had carried out law enforcement activities off eastern Taiwan, asserting increased control over the adjacent waters. In response, Taiwan's CGA refuted these claims, accusing China of using law enforcement as a pretext to harass Taiwan and falsely suggest Beijing's jurisdiction over the area.
The CGA reported deploying vessels such as the Ji An to monitor the operations of the Chinese coast guard ships Hushi (CCG 1308) and Meishan (CCG 2303). They emphasized that under international law, maritime jurisdiction is linked to land sovereignty, affirming Taiwan's exclusive sovereign rights over its eastern exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and denying any Chinese jurisdiction in the waters surrounding Taiwan.
Additionally, the agency criticized Beijing for spreading misinformation by referring to Taiwan as "China's Taiwan Island" and falsely branding its activities as legitimate law enforcement patrols. They also accused China of attempting to intimidate vessels through radio communications.
Ocean Affairs Council specialist Pai Pang-ting, speaking at a security forum in Taipei, highlighted Beijing's strategy of using coast guard, research, and fishing vessels to challenge Taiwan's maritime law enforcement. He warned that China is attempting to portray its repeated incursions as routine administrative management, thereby seeking to undermine Taiwan's jurisdiction over its waters.
