Taiwan Secures Crucial Extra-Innings Victory Over Puerto Rico at U-18 World Cup

Naha: Taiwan kept its semifinal hopes alive at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup with a 1-0, two extra-innings Super Round victory over Puerto Rico in Naha, Japan on Friday.

According to Focus Taiwan, Li Kai-qi delivered a crucial single to shallow center in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Hsu Shu-cheng to score the game's only run at Okinawa Cellular Stadium. The tactical move saw Hsu and Pasula Takislinian advancing to second and third base on a double steal, setting the stage for Li's game-winning hit off Puerto Rico's reliever Joniel Miranda.

The match was a testament to the strength of both teams' pitching staff, as they remained scoreless through eight and a half innings. Taiwan's starter, Chen Shih-chan, was impressive on the mound, giving up just two singles, striking out five batters, and issuing no walks over seven innings. On the other side, Puerto Rico's Richard De Jesus also showcased his skills, allowing only one hit and one walk before handing over pitching duties to Miranda.

Despite struggling offensively, with only two hits in the game - a single by Zeng Sheng-en in the sixth inning and Li's decisive hit - Taiwan managed to improve its Super Round record to 2-2, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in the semifinals. This victory was especially significant as it marked Taiwan's first win in the stage following a loss to South Korea on Thursday.

Taiwan is set to face host Japan on Saturday, a match that promises to be another exciting encounter as they continue their quest for a place in the semifinals.
