The value of Taiwan’s semiconductor market is expected to reach NT$4.89 trillion (US$157.36 billion) in 2022, the head of an industry group said at a pre-show press conference held for SEMICON Taiwan on Tuesday.
SEMICON Taiwan, an annual international trade fair for the semiconductor technology sector, will run from Wednesday through Friday at the Nangang International Exhibition Center in Taipei.
Should the market reach NT$4.89 trillion, this will represent a 17.9 percent increase over the previous year, according to Terry Tsao (???), global chief marketing officer and Taiwan president of SEMI, which represents companies in the electronics manufacturing and design supply chain.
The industry’s capital expenditure this year is forecast to reach US$48.03 billion, a year-over-year increase of 42.1 percent, while the markets for semiconductor equipment and materials are each projected to grow by 24.1 percent and 9.9 percent, respectively, Tsai added.
During the press event, the SEMI chief also provided his insights on the global semiconductor market, which is forecast to grow 12 percent to US$625 billion in 2022.
This, however, does not come without challenges, as the global industry for semiconductors currently faces four major hurdles, including geopolitics, supply chain management in the post-pandemic era, sustainable development, and talent shortages, he added.
Organized by SEMI, the international semiconductor exhibition this year will host 700 exhibitors worldwide to showcase their innovations in 2,450 booths, the biggest turnout in 27 years, Tsao said.
According to organizers, the show in Taipei will feature a wide range of semiconductor developments, such as advanced manufacturing, heterogeneous integration, compound semiconductors, auto chips, smart manufacturing, ESG (environment, social, and governance) & sustainability, and semiconductor cybersecurity.
