Paris, Taiwan excelled at this year's invention exhibition in Paris -- Concours Lepine International Paris 2019 -- winning seven gold medals Tuesday at the annual event.
Two of the seven products to take top honors, a multi-functional fire extinguisher created by Pao Tai International Enterprise Corp. Ltd., and a multi-purpose car cover distributed by Alsolox Taiwan Digital, attracted the attention of the French media. Due to the Yellow Vests Protest that started late last year, and the fire that devastated Notre-Dame Cathedral last month, visitors were especially interested in fire-safety items this year, according to Taiwanese mission head Hsu Yi-chuan
The Paris Fire Department also sent personnel to the event, Hsu noted.
According to Pao Tai general manager Lin Huan-ku the easy-to-carry fire extinguisher, branded as "Fire Out," has a spray nozzle that allows those fleeing a fire to spray foam on themselves for protection.
There is enough foam in each "Fire Out" for 40 seconds of use and the fire extinguisher can be stored in environments with temperatures as high as 90 degrees Celsius, which is critical to escaping a fire, Lin explained.
The car cover, according to its inventor Hsieh Wen-yuan is made from a fabric that protects vehicles from sunlight, acid rain, falling leaves and bird droppings.
Weighing only 4.8 kilograms, the remote-controlled cover is also equipped with a hidden device that makes a buzzing noise if someone tries to remove it, Hsieh said. This year, Taiwan submitted 48 entries to the invention exhibition, which is being held from April 27 to May 8. With seven gold medals, Taiwanese inventors surpassed last year's performance.
