Taiwan swimmer finishes eighth in first Paralympic final in Tokyo

Swimmer Chen Liang-da (???) finished eighth in his first final at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo on Sunday in his second event at the competition.

The 18-year-old swimmer, the youngest among Taiwan's 10 athletes competing at the Tokyo Paralympics, reached the final of the men's 400m freestyle S7 event after finishing his heat in 5:15.89 earlier in the day.

Chen's time in the final improved to 5:10.65, but it was not enough for a medal after Israel's Mark Malyar won the race in a time of 4:31.06, breaking the world record he set in 2019.

Sunday's event was Chen's second in Tokyo, after the swimmer was eliminated in the men's 200m individual medley SM7 heats Friday.

Chen, who won two silver medals at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia, had said that having a chance to attend the Tokyo Paralympics was already an achievement for him.

Chen's parents sent him to learn swimming at the age of three as a form of exercise and rehabilitation as he was born without the lower half of his two legs.

He is scheduled to race again on Monday in the men's 100m backstroke S7 event.

As of Sunday, Taiwan had won one medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, a bronze by table tennis player Tien Shiau-wen (???). She will next compete in the women's team event.
