London: Taiwanese Olympians Lin Yun-ju and Cheng I-ching clinched the mixed doubles title at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender London 2025 competition on Sunday. The pair, ranked No. 11 globally, triumphed over Hong Kong’s world No. 5 duo, Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem, in a thrilling final at London’s Copper Box Arena.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lin and Cheng demonstrated resilience and strategic gameplay throughout the match. The Taiwanese team initially surged ahead, securing a six-point lead in the opening game. However, Wong and Doo managed to rally and take the game 11-8. The second game saw a more balanced contest, with Lin and Cheng tying the score at 9-9 before clinching a narrow 11-9 victory.
Building on this momentum, the Taiwanese duo dominated the third game, winning 11-7. As the fourth game commenced, Lin and Cheng quickly established a five-point lead, reaching a 7-2 advantage. Despite a determined comeback from the Hong Kong team, who narrowed the score to 10-9, Lin and Cheng held
their nerve to secure the final point and win the match.
Lin and Cheng, who previously won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, have a history of success as a mixed doubles team, once holding the world No. 1 position. Their reunion this season has proven fruitful, culminating in their latest victory.
The WTT Star Contender London 2025 competition, held from October 21-26, also saw Lin and Cheng reach the semifinals in their respective singles categories, showcasing their individual talents on the international stage.
