Taiwan table tennis player advances at Tokyo Paralympics

Taiwanese table tennis player Tien Shiau-wen (???) advanced to the quarterfinals in the women’s class 10 singles event after winning her third group match at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Friday.

Tien, 21, secured her third straight-game victory in three days after beating China’s Zhao Xiaojing (???) 11-7, 11-7, 11-5, in group C.

The first-time Paralympian will next face 19-year-old Merve Cansu Demir of Turkey in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Class 6-10 are standing classes in table tennis at the Paralympics, while class 1-5 are sitting classes for players in a wheelchair.

Another Taiwanese female class 10 player, 21-year-old Lin Tzu-yu (???), however, saw her campaign in the singles event end after she suffered a second defeat in group B.

She will still compete in the women’s class 9-10 team’s event in Tokyo.

In the quarterfinals, Cheng Ming-chih (???), the only male table tennis player representing Taiwan at the Tokyo Paralympics, was beaten by China’s Cao Ningning (???), who won the class 5 match 11-8, 11-9, 11-6.

Lu Pi-chun (???), who is attending her second Paralympic Games at the age of 58, also lost to a Chinese opponent, 22-year-old Gu Xiaodan (???), who won the class 4 quarterfinal match 10-12, 11-7,11-7,11-2.

A total of 10 athletes are representing Taiwan at the Tokyo Paralympics, with four of them table tennis players.
