Taipei, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport was recognized by the annual Airport Service Quality Awards for 2017, coming in third place in the "over 40 million passengers per year" category under the Best Airport By Size category, according to results announced Tuesday by the Airports Council International (ACI).
This is the first time the airport has received such an award since it passed the 40 million mark in 2016, when it served 42.3 million passengers, according to Taoyuan International Airport Co.
First place was a tie between Delhi and Mumbai airports, while second place was also a tie between Beijing and Shanghai Pudong airports, the ACI report showed.
Taiwan Taoyuan Airport won first place in the 2016 ASQ Award for "Best Airport by Size: 25-40 Million Passengers," based on performance in 2015.
The ranking is compiled by indexing passenger's answers to satisfaction surveys representing 34 key service indicators across 343 airports worldwide, according to ACI's website.
About 600,000 passengers per year are interviewed prior to boarding flights and asked to rate their satisfaction with the airport's services, ACI said.
Taiwan Taoyuan Airport said it handled 44.88 million passengers last year, an increase of 6.11 percent from the previous year.
To better accommodate a growing number of global passengers, the airport company has begun a project to expand the size of Terminal Two, which is scheduled to be completed in June 2018.
Construction has also started of a third terminal, but it is not expected to be completed until 2020. The company is also conducting an environmental impact assessment on a possible third runway, which could be completed by 2025.
