Taipei: Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA) announced its decision to revoke the dependent-based residence permit of a Chinese social media influencer who allegedly advocated for China's unification with Taiwan through military force.
According to Focus Taiwan, the influencer, known by her surname Liu, will have her residence permit revoked under Article 14 of the "Measures for the permission of family-based residence, long-term residence and settlement of people from the Mainland Area in the Taiwan Area." The NIA detailed that Liu, who operates under the online alias "Yaya in Taiwan" on Douyin with a following of nearly 400,000, made statements promoting unification by force, a violation of the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area.
The NIA stated that it received reports of Liu's controversial remarks and, following the necessity of investigative procedures, summoned her for a statement under the Administrative Procedure Act. The investigation confirmed that Liu's actions breached regulations for Chinese nationals residing in Taiwan.
The agency further clarified that Liu would be barred from applying for a family-based residence permit for the next five years. This decision aims to safeguard national security and maintain social stability. The NIA urged against making provocative online statements for internet traffic and profit, as they could lead to legal violations and unnecessary use of administrative resources.
The agency also condemned any efforts that undermine Taiwan's democratic principles.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Liu has been granted a period, on humanitarian grounds, to organize her family affairs before her departure is arranged by the authorities, considering her dependent status and family arrangements.
