Taiwan to send at least 11 Olympic athletes to Universiade

The Taiwan team to the FISU World University Games this year will include at least 11 Olympians, some of whom are medalists, the Sports Administration said Thursday.

Taiwanese athletes have already been selected for competition in gymnastics, archery, judo, rowing, and taekwondo at the Chengdu 2021 Universiade, which was postponed from last summer to June and July this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sports Administration said.

The selection of athletes to represent Taiwan in other sports is in progress and will be completed by the end of April, before the team’s formal registration by May 25, said Hung Chih-chang (???), deputy head of the Sports Administration.

Those already selected for the Taiwan team include 11 Olympic athletes, Hung said, naming five medalists — gymnast Lee Chih-kai (???), judoka Yang Yung-wei (???), archer Tang Chih-chun (???), table tennis player Lin Yun-ju (???), and taekwondo athlete Lo Chia-ling (???).

The Universiade will be good opportunity for Taiwanese athletes to warm up for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Sept. 10-25, Hung said, noting that several international sporting events have been canceled since the start of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

According to the current schedule, some 269 medals in 15 sports will be up for grabs at the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games in China, from June 26 to July 7.

The Games were scheduled to start on Aug. 18, 2021, but were postponed because many students had been unable to train due to extended closure of university campuses and sports facilities, according to international media reports.
