The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Taiwanese citizens on Saturday against traveling to Nigeria’s capital Abuja and to Sandton, the financial center of Johannesburg, following terror alerts issued by the United States and some other Western countries.
The ministry also instructed Taiwan’s representative offices in Nigeria and South Africa to alert Taiwanese living in those countries of possible terror attacks so they can avoid going to the targeted areas, according to a statement issued by the ministry Saturday.
The U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia and some European countries have issued a security advisory to their citizens in Nigeria due to an “elevated threat of terrorist attack” in Abuja, it said.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in South Africa has advised staff to avoid crowds of people and other large public gatherings in the Greater Sandton area of Johannesburg on Oct. 29 and 30, the ministry said in the statement.
The U.S. Embassy in South Africa said via its website that it had received information that terrorists may be planning an attack targeting large gatherings of people at an unspecified location in the area on Oct. 29.
There was no further information regarding the timing, method or target of the potential attack.
