A team of bakers from Taiwan on Tuesday won first place at an international baking competition against 10 teams from other countries in Paris, France.
Taiwan’s team of three bakers and their coach Wu Wu-hsien (???) were thrilled, hugging each other and shedding tears of joy on hearing the judges announce their win at the 2022 Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie, or Bakery World Cup.
Supporters in the audience cheered and sang the national anthem of the Republic of China (Taiwan) together with the winning bakers after they received the golden trophy from the organizers.
The team also received a personal congratulatory message from President Tsai Ing-wen (???) conveyed by the deputy head of Taiwan’s de facto embassy in France Bernard Liu (???).
Held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from March 26-28, the World Bakery Cup also featured teams from Costa Rica, Ivory Coast, Denmark, Egypt, France, Morocco, Norway, Netherlands, Senegal and South Korea.
The Netherlands took second place and Norway placed third in the biennial competition, which challenges bakers in four events — the “Baguette and Breads of the World,” “Sweet Viennese Pastries,” “Artistic Piece,” and “Gourmet Baking.”
The three bakers competing for Taiwan were Justin Wu (???) who was responsible for the “Baguette and Breads of the World” test, Lee Chung-wei (???) who handled the “Sweet Viennese Pastries” test, and Hsu Shao-huan (???) who took the “Artistic Piece” test.
The three bakers competed as a team in the “Gourmet Baking” test.
This year was the 11th edition of the biennial World Bakery Cup, which from 1992-2012 was held once every four years. In 2020, Taiwan came second behind South Korea.
The Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie was created by French baguette baker Christian Vabret in 1992, in the hope of bringing together the best bakers in the world to compete against each other.
