Taiwan scored 15 runs in four innings against Italy in its final game in the Opening Round of the WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup in Tainan on Tuesday evening.
The 15-0 victory lifted Taiwan’s record in the tournament played at Tainan’s Asia-Pacific International Baseball Stadium to 4 wins and one defeat before it plays in the Super Round starting Thursday.
Competing under the name “Chinese Taipei,” Taiwan was one of three teams in its group to qualify for the Super Round on Monday along with Mexico and Venezuela.
During the game on Tuesday, Taiwan wasted no time in putting itself on the scoreboard with Ou Tzu-chiao (???) singling to center field while Wu Sheng-zhi (???) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Taiwan put up video game numbers sending nine players to the home plate and boosting its lead to 10-0 by the end of the third inning.
However, the hot batting streak did not stop there, Taiwan posted another five-run inning at the bottom of the fourth to run away with the game 15-0.
When asked about the upcoming Super Round on Thursday, Ou said he hopes the team can keep winning.
Now in its sixth edition, the 2022 WBSC U-12 Baseball World Cup has 11 teams competing in two groups in the opening round, held July 29 to Aug. 3, before the top three finishers in each group advance to the super round.
The remaining teams will compete in the placement round, which is played on the same dates as the super round from Aug. 4-6.
The top two finishers of the super round will compete for the U-12 World title on Aug. 7, while the number three and four placed teams will face off for the bronze medal on the same day.
Taiwan, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico, South Africa and Italy are in Group A, while Japan, South Korea, the United States, Czech Republic and Dominican Republic make up Group B.
