Washington: Taiwan's eight-member legislative delegation to the inauguration of United States President-elect Donald Trump has received invitations to watch the livestream of the event in Capital One Arena, one of the lawmakers said Monday.
According to Focus Taiwan, Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Wang Ting-yu revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and Taiwan's representative office in the U.S. secured four tickets to watch the inauguration livestream in a VIP room at the arena. These tickets have been allocated to the leader of the delegation, Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, opposition Kuomintang's (KMT) Ko Chih-en, Chen Gau-tzu of the smaller opposition Taiwan People's Party, and Wang himself.
The remaining four members of the delegation, Chen Kuan-ting and Kuo Yu-ching of the DPP, along with Lee Yen-hsiu and Ko Ju-chun of the KMT, will watch the proceedings from within the arena. Wang shared a group photo on Facebook showing the delegation traveling on the Washington Metro system to attend the event.
Due to the forecast of sub-zero temperatures in Washington on Monday, Trump's inauguration ceremony was relocated to the Capitol Rotunda, leading to a decrease in the number of guests allowed at the ceremony. The Capital One Arena, which can accommodate approximately 20,000 people, will be available for attendees to view the swearing-in ceremony and inaugural address via livestream.
MOFA had announced that the Capitol Rotunda would host a limited number of attendees, primarily members of Congress, senior government officials, and Trump's family. As a result, many international guests, including the Taiwanese delegation, would not be able to attend the ceremony in person.
