Taiwanese Olympian Chen Po-jen breaks national weightlifting records

Taiwanese Olympian weightlifter Chen Po-jen (陳柏任) on Saturday won two silver medals and a bronze at the 2022 Asian Weightlifting Championships, where he also broke three national records.

Chen competed in the men’s 96 kg weight class in the championships, which are being held Oct. 6-16 in the Bahrain capital Manama.

On Saturday, Chen failed to lift his requested 172 kg on his first attempt in the snatch event, but he succeeded on the second try and followed up with a 177-kg snatch to win a silver medal and break his personal record of 176 kg at the Tokyo Olympics.
After the snatch event, Chen made three successful lifts in the clean & jerk event, easily raising 195 kg, then lifting 201 kg on his second attempt, and hoisting 206 kg on his third try to break the national record of 200 kg and bag a bronze medal.

The combined weight of 383 kg in his best snatch and clean & jerk lifts also earned him a silver medal and established a new national record.

The national records in the clean & jerk and the 96 kg categories were both set by Chen this year at the National University and College Athletic Games in May.
