A Taiwanese popcorn chicken festival in Kaohsiung drew nearly 70,000 visitors to the dozens of food stands set up for the event held over the weekend, the city government’s tourism bureau said Monday.
The Aug. 27-28 event was organized in the first-floor plaza of the FE21′ Mega Far Eastern Department Store, the bureau said in a release.
It attracted a lot of shoppers to Far Eastern department store, which reported a 30 percent revenue increase in the two days the festival was held, while surrounding establishments including the Sogo and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Stores also profited from the increase in foot traffic, it said.
According to the bureau, the event welcomed nearly 100 Taiwanese popcorn chicken stands from all over the country, each offering its own unique flavor.
Many vendors reported good business over the two-day event.
Citing an example, the bureau said one Taiwanese popcorn chicken operator from Taipei reportedly worked non-stop until his hands trembled from exhaustion.
Meanwhile, a Taichung vendor, who reported selling out within two hours on the first day, also expressed surprise at the number of people visiting the festival, the bureau said.
According to the city’s tourism bureau, popcorn chicken is one of Taiwan’s most popular snack foods.
