Taiwan’s 3×3 women’s basketball team secured a spot at next year’s U18 FIBA World Cup after defeating Mongolia 21-17 the U17 Asia Cup bronze medal match in Kuala Lumpur, Sunday.
After defeating Malaysia and Iran on Friday to enter the tournament’s quarterfinals, Taiwan routed India 21-4 on Sunday, before losing an 18-19 nailbiter to an undefeated Japan team in the last four.
In the bronze medal match, however, Taiwan bounced back to defeat Mongolia 21-17, earning it one of the competition’s three 2023 U18 FIBA World Cup berths.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s men’s 3×3 team also made it into the bronze medal match against Mongolia but lost 18-21 to have their hopes of a U17 FIBA World Cup appearance.
FIBA’s U17 Asia Cup is one of several regional competitions the federation holds as qualifying events for the 32-team U18 World Cup, which will be played in Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.
