Taipei, Taiwanese badminton ace Chou Tien-chen on Thursday cruised to the round of 16 of the men's singles at the YONEX German Open 2019, winning in two straight games.
The second seed Chou defeated Zhou Zeqi of China 21-19 and 21-12 in the first-round match in 37 minutes to advance to the second round of the tournament.
Chou will next face World No. 36 Lee Cheuk-yiu of Hong Kong. In their last encounter, at the YONEX Chinese Taipei Open 2018, Chou won in two straight games.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese Wang Tzu-wei lost to world champion Kento Momota of Japan 18-21, 15-21 in the first round of the 2019 German Open in Mulheim.
Taiwan's Li Yang and Wang Chi-ling who won the men's doubles title at the Barcelona Spain Masters earlier this month, also advanced to the round of 16 in the men's doubles, beating their Chinese rivals 21-17, 21-19.
This year, the YONEX German Open, a Super 300 event on the HSBC BWF World Tour, carries a purse of US$150,000. Chou is aiming to clinch his third men's singles title at the tournament.
