Jiangshan: Taiwanese weightlifter Hong Zi-yu clinched three silver medals on Friday at the 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships in the women's 45 kilogram category. Competing in Jiangshan, China, Hong achieved a snatch lift of 73 kg, a clean and jerk of 88 kg, and a total lift of 161 kg, securing second place in all three events.
According to Focus Taiwan, Hong initially struggled with her snatch attempts, failing her first lift at 70 kg. However, she successfully completed the lift on her subsequent attempts, eventually reaching 73 kg. In the clean and jerk segment, Hong lifted 85 kg on her first try and improved to 88 kg on her second. Her attempt at 98 kg, aiming to break Taiwan's national total weight record, was ultimately unsuccessful.
Hong's performance was overshadowed by China's Zhao Jinhong, who dominated the competition. Zhao set new Asian and world records with her 90 kg snatch and went on to achieve 100 kg in the clean and jerk, amassing a total of 190 kg to win gold in all categories.
In the women's 49 kg category, Taiwan's Lin Cheng-jing broke her own record with an 85 kg snatch, finishing fourth. She also ranked fourth in the clean and jerk and total lift, achieving 100 kg and 185 kg, respectively. Among the five competitors, Fang Wan-ling, who represented Taiwan in the Paris Olympics, ended up in last place due to injuries, with a 75 kg snatch, a 95 kg clean and jerk, and a total of 170 kg.
