Taiwan’s Lee and Wang advance to semifinals of BWF Finals

Taiwan's Olympic gold medalists Lee Yang (??) and Wang Chi-lin (???) advanced to the semifinals of the men's doubles at the BWF World Tour Finals in Indonesia on Friday after finishing second in the group phase.

The Taiwanese duo advanced with a 1-1 record in the group after not playing Friday. They were scheduled to go up against the World Tour No. 7 team of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy of India, but the duo withdrew earlier in the week due to injury.

Also advancing from the group were first seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia, who fended off Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark in three games 21-15, 18-21, 21-9 on Friday.

Had the Danes won, the Taiwanese may have been eliminated depending on how the tiebreakers fell.

The tournament, which is being held from Dec. 1-5 and features a total purse of US$1.5 million, is also the last stop of the three-tournament "Indonesia Badminton Festival 2021."

Yang and Wang have not been in top form in Indonesia, falling in the quarterfinals in the US$600,000 Super 750 Indonesia Masters and in the second round of the US$850,000 Super 1000 Indonesia Open.

They have not won a tournament since taking gold at the Olympics.
