Taiwan’s NTU Climbs to 23rd in Asia in Latest QS Rankings

Taipei: National Taiwan University (NTU) has risen to 23rd place in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2026 Asia University Rankings, up from its previous position. NTU remains Taiwan's highest-ranked institution in these rankings, as stated in a release on Tuesday.

According to Focus Taiwan, seven other Taiwanese universities also made it into the top 100. National Tsing Hua University is ranked 37th, followed by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University at 41st, National Cheng Kung University at 43rd, and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology at 46th. National Sun Yat-sen University tied for 72nd place with Xiamen University in China, while National Taiwan Normal University and National Taipei University of Technology ranked 80th and 88th, respectively.

Taiwan secured the fifth position in terms of the number of universities in the top 100, trailing behind China, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. The QS Asia Rankings utilize 11 indicators specifically tailored for the region, setting them apart from the QS World University Rankings. NTU is recognized for its exceptional academic and employer reputation and leads in the International Students indicator.

Across Asia, the University of Hong Kong has been named the top university, surpassing China's Peking University. Singapore's Nanyang Technological University rose to a tie for third place with the National University of Singapore.

This year's QS Asia Rankings edition is the largest to date, featuring 1,529 universities from 25 higher education systems, including 57 from Taiwan. Among Taiwanese universities, 17 saw improvements in their rankings, three remained stable, and 29 declined, while eight made their debut this year.

In terms of specific indicators, the University of Tokyo leads in both academic and employer reputation, ranking 26th overall. Taiwan's National Chiayi University achieved regional recognition for staff with Ph.D. degrees, with an overall ranking of 1001-1100.
