Taipei: Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced on Tuesday its ongoing process to acquire a property in Sydney, Australia, designated to become the new location for its representative office by 2027. Chen Jin-ling, director-general of MOFA's Department of General Affairs, disclosed that the ministry is nearing the completion of the property ownership transfer. However, the specific location of the property remains undisclosed.According to Focus Taiwan, Chen mentioned during a weekly MOFA news briefing that the strategic goal is to relocate to the new Sydney office by the end of 2027. The current Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney, which acts as Taiwan's de facto representative office, operates from a rented space on the 19th floor of 25 Martin Place.In addition to Sydney, MOFA has intentions to acquire properties for its offices in the U.S. cities of Boston, Houston, and Denver. Chen noted that the proposals for these acquisitions are being adjusted in line with recommendations fr om the Cabinet.MOFA currently manages 111 overseas offices, with 19 situated in government-owned facilities. Since 2002, the ministry has pursued the purchase of properties for its international offices to mitigate rental expenses. Recent acquisitions include properties in Italy and the U.S. cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco.
