Taoyuan Mayor elected to head Hong Kong and Macau Association

Taipei, Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (???) took the helm of the Friends of Hong Kong and Macau Association Sunday (FHKMA) after a board committee vote.

Cheng said he expects the FHKMA to continue to serve as a platform for communication and dialogue between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Cross-strait relations are crucial, said Cheng, adding that after taking office he will work to see more young people taking part in cross-strait affairs.

He hopes that there can be closer contacts and improved relationships between the people of Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau, said Cheng.

Although various groups in Taiwan have different views on cross-strait relations, said Cheng, one commonality is the hope that Taiwan's democratic values are not lost and the framework for peaceful cross-strait development maintained.

Recently, there has been intensified opposition on both sides of the strait which is not a good development, added Cheng.

The FHKMA offers a platform for communication, dialogue and support, said Cheng, adding that expressing Taiwan's friendly and rational voice helps to improve dialogue between both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The FHKMA, which officially changed to its current name in 1992, started in 1986, according to its website. Its purpose is to promote friendship with Hong Kong and Macau residents and help sustain the freedom, democracy, stability and prosperity of the two regions, as a non-profit social organization.
