Teng Kai-wei Gets No Decision in Houston’s Narrow Loss to Brewers

Houston: Houston right-hander Teng Kai-wei, the only Taiwanese pitcher active in Major League Baseball (MLB), recorded a no decision on Friday after allowing three runs over five innings in the Astros’ 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Teng, who won his previous two starts, struck out seven while giving up three hits and four walks. Of his 91 pitches, 53 were strikes.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Astros opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run by Cam Smith, marking his sixth of the season. It was the third consecutive game started by Teng in which Houston scored first. The Brewers responded in the following inning with David Hamilton launching a solo shot to left field, tying the game.

Houston regained the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs with the help of a walk, two doubles, a sacrifice fly, and a throwing error. Teng entered the fifth inning having thrown 67 pitches and quickly recorded two outs on a groundout and a strikeout. However, he then walked
Christian Yelich before Jackson Chourio hit a two-run homer to deep center field, cutting the Astros’ lead to 4-3. Teng retired William Contreras on one pitch to end the inning and complete his outing, finishing with a record of 3-3 and a 2.57 ERA this season.

Teng was in line for the win before the Brewers tied the game at 4-4, eventually scoring the winning run in the 10th inning. With this loss, the Astros dropped the opener of the three-game series and fell to 26-33 on the season.

On the same day, the Cleveland Guardians called up outfielder Stuart Fairchild, who was born to a Taiwanese mother and represented Team Taiwan at the 2026 World Baseball Classic in March. This move came after the Guardians placed outfielder Steven Kwan on the bereavement/family medical emergency list for a leave of three to seven days. Fairchild hit five home runs in 40 Triple-A games this season.
