Teng Kai-wei Impresses Despite San Francisco Giants’ Defeat to Arizona Diamondbacks

San francisco: San Francisco Giants pitcher Teng Kai-wei delivered an impressive performance against the Arizona Diamondbacks, despite the team's 8-1 defeat in the opener of their nine-game road trip.

According to Focus Taiwan, Teng, the sole Taiwanese pitcher in Major League Baseball, struck out five batters while allowing just two hits and one walk over four innings at Chase Field. The game was tied at 1-1 when Teng concluded his outing, finishing with a no decision. His only run allowed occurred in the first inning following a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and two strikeouts, with Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Geraldo Perdomo scoring due to a throwing error by Teng during a pickoff attempt.

Teng concluded the first inning with his third strikeout and permitted only two more baserunners on singles in the third and fourth innings. He avoided a potential loss when Casey Schmitt hit a solo home run to center field off Zac Gallen in the third inning. Gallen, however, did not allow any further runs, securing his 12th win of the season with a two-hit, six-inning start.

Teng's performance saw his ERA decrease to 6.41, with highlights including two strikeouts of Diamondbacks' Taiwanese-American star Corbin Carroll. Carroll, a two-time All-Star and 2023 Rookie of the Year awardee, went 1-for-4, contributing a leadoff double in the sixth inning that initiated a decisive six-run inning for Arizona.

The win advanced the Diamondbacks to 76-75, moving them 0.5 games ahead of the Giants, who now stand at 75-75 in the National League West. This loss places San Francisco in a challenging position as the wild-card race intensifies. Meanwhile, the New York Mets, holding the third National League wild-card berth at 77-73, were idle, and the Cincinnati Reds matched the Giants' record with an 11-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
