Taipei, Two townships in southern Taiwan suffered a total of NT$20 million (US$640,000)worth in agricultural losses as more than 120 hectares of fruit plantations were damaged by a tornado Monday.
The tornado touched down at two villages in Linbian and Nanzhou townships in Pingtung County at around 3 p.m., uprooting trees, electricity poles and collapsing houses.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, a total of 121.5 hectares of fruit had been destroyed, said Huang Kuojung, chief of Pingtung's Department of Agriculture, adding that bell fruit, bananas and assorted fruits and vegetables were the worstaffected.
Pingtung County will further assess the situation together with officials from the agriculture and food agency, the Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Office and other local offices, Huang said.
Military personnel braved heavy rain Tuesday to help local residents clean their homes and remove debris left by the tornado from the streets, Huang added.
