Taipei: The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) has announced plans to conduct an online election on February 15 to select a new leader. This move comes in the wake of former Chairman Ko Wen-je stepping down due to his involvement in a corruption scandal.
According to Focus Taiwan, Ko, who is currently detained on corruption charges, resigned from his position as the leader of the opposition TPP on January 1. In response, the party's central committee appointed lawmaker Huang Kuo-chang as the acting chairperson on the same day.
The TPP's website revealed on Monday that potential candidates for the chairmanship can register online from Tuesday through Friday of this week. The eligibility criteria for candidacy require individuals to be current or former members of the TPP's central committee and to have held party membership for at least one year.
Candidates are scheduled to present their policies on February 8 and February 14. The TPP has outlined that eligible members can cast their votes online between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on February 15. The party's regulations stipulate that voters must have maintained their membership for a minimum of four months to participate in the leadership election.
The newly elected leader will serve a term from February 19, 2025, to December 31, 2026, marking the second leadership term since the party's founding by former Taipei Mayor Ko in 2019.
