TPP’s Huang Advocates ‘Coopetition’ with KMT as Democratic Model for Taiwan

Taipei: Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Chairman and New Taipei mayoral hopeful Huang Kuo-chang stated on Sunday that "coopetition" with the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) could establish a model for Taiwan's democracy. Huang made these remarks during the launch of his campaign headquarters, amid speculation about a potential face-off with current Deputy Taipei Mayor Lee Shu-chuan, who is seen as a likely KMT candidate in the New Taipei mayoral race.

According to Focus Taiwan, Huang described the contest as a form of "coopetition" with friends in the KMT and encouraged supporters to view the race as a demonstration of the vitality and health of Taiwan's democracy. He emphasized that the political process could transcend verbal attacks, allowing different parties to cooperate toward shared goals. Huang committed to maintaining a consistent approach from the Legislature to New Taipei, showcasing the TPP's ability to deliver results.

Huang declared himself an implementer, asserting that this role is essential for Taiwan's society at present. The event in New Taipei's Xinzhuang District also saw the attendance of TPP founder and former Chairman Ko Wen-je, alongside media personality Jaw Shaw-kong, who previously ran as the KMT's vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 election.

Ko Wen-je urged voters to support Huang with the aim of making the New Taipei City government more open, civically engaged, and transparent. He advocated for governance that is rational, practical, scientific, efficient, and professional, while valuing institutions. Jaw Shaw-kong described both Huang and Lee as "good friends" and "exceptional" individuals.

Jaw further mentioned that KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun had informed him that the party's mayoral nominee would be decided before the Lunar New Year holiday, expressing his belief that Lee would be the nominee. He also anticipated that the KMT and TPP would coordinate their nominees by March.
