Train Service in Chiayi County Resumes After Fatal Track Accident

Chiayi: Train services between Chiayi and Nanjing stations in Chiayi County have resumed following a tragic accident involving a pedestrian on the tracks, Taiwan Railway Corp. announced Monday. The incident had led to a temporary suspension of services as emergency crews responded to the scene.

According to Focus Taiwan, the railway operator reported that the incident occurred at 5:23 p.m. when an individual trespassed onto the tracks and was struck by a northbound Tze-Chiang limited express train. The impact propelled the person onto a neighboring track, where they were subsequently hit by a southbound local train. The identity of the individual has not been disclosed.

In the immediate aftermath, railway police and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene, resulting in the suspension of train services in both directions between Chiayi and Nanjing stations. Passengers were accommodated with shuttle buses to continue their journeys during the disruption.

The service suspension lasted until 7:28 p.m., when operations were restored. Taiwan Railway Corp. expressed its condolences and emphasized the importance of safety and vigilance around railway tracks.
