Tropical Storm Fung-Wong Prompts School and Work Closures Across Taiwan

Miaoli: Local governments have announced the closure of schools and offices in several regions, including Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung County, Penghu County, and parts of Hualien County, in anticipation of Tropical Storm Fung-Wong. This decision, made by the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration (DGPA), affects both public and private sectors, as many private companies typically follow these government-led closures.

According to Focus Taiwan, the DGPA has specified that in Hualien County, the closures will affect schools and workplaces in Guangfu, Wanrong, and Fenglin townships. The DGPA, responsible for managing government workforce policies, released this suspension information as the tropical storm approached Taiwan on Tuesday evening. The closures are a precautionary measure as the storm bears down on the island.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that as of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Tropical Storm Fung-Wong was positioned approximately 270 kilometers south-southwest of Eluanbi, the southernmost point of Taiwan. The storm is advancing northeast at a speed of 8 kilometers per hour, accelerating gradually to 23 kph, with maximum sustained winds reaching 90 kph and gusts up to 119 kph. The CWA forecasts that the storm will bring heavy rainfall to the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan in the coming days.

Fung-Wong is expected to make landfall in either Kaohsiung or Pingtung County in southern Taiwan on Wednesday. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed through official channels for any updates regarding the storm’s progression and related safety measures. For the most current information on school and work closures, individuals are encouraged to visit the DGPA website.
