New York: U.S. House Representative Mike Waltz, recently nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as the national security advisor, has highlighted Taiwan's critical role in advanced chip production and global trade. Waltz made these remarks at a Reagan Foundation event in California in late October, where he was promoting his book "Hard Truths: Think and Lead Like a Green Beret." He raised concerns over China's leader Xi Jinping's ambitions, stating that Xi is openly discussing the decline of America and aiming to replace it as a global leader while undermining Western values.According to Focus Taiwan, Waltz described Xi's strategy as moving towards a "techno surveillance state dictatorship," with Taiwan as the next target following Tibet and Hong Kong. The Florida lawmaker warned about the significant consequences of a Chinese takeover of Taiwan, which would mean control over 80 percent of the world's advanced computer chips and the crucial shipping lanes that are vital to Japan, South Korea, and Southea st Asia's economies, collectively representing about 50 percent of global GDP.Waltz, who was the first Green Beret elected to Congress in 2018, has served multiple tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa. He is a staunch critic of China, actively participating in the House China Task Force, which aims to counter the influence of the Chinese Communist Party. He pointed out that China's military, particularly its navy and space forces, now surpasses the U.S., and noted that China is significantly expanding its nuclear arsenal.Waltz further urged future U.S. presidents to consider non-traditional warfare tactics, such as cyber attacks, highlighting the activities of Volt Typhoon, a state-sponsored hacking group from China. He cautioned that Volt Typhoon's operations go beyond espionage, suggesting they are embedding "cyber time bombs" within U.S. systems. Waltz emphasized that in contemporary warfare, the initial conflict is increasingly initiated in space and cyber domains.
