Stanford:Former President Tsai Ing-wen declared that no threats or coercion would deter Taiwan from its global engagement and contributions. Her statements were made during a forum held at Stanford University's Hoover Institution.
According to Focus Taiwan, Tsai emphasized Taiwan's resilience in managing differences and crises, underscoring the nation's experience in building a democracy under challenging conditions. She noted that while discussions about Taiwan often highlight semiconductors and AI, the true essence lies in the experiences of its 23 million people.
Tsai addressed the growing challenges democracies face from external and internal pressures, including sophisticated authoritarian campaigns and domestic polarization. She warned of AI's role in spreading disinformation, which complicates consensus on responding to threats.
Despite these challenges, Taiwan has learned to protect its democracy through decades of pressure and political competition, transitioning from authoritarian rule to a vibrant democracy. Tsai highlighted the importance of managing relations with China through preparedness and restraint, maintaining the status quo while safeguarding democracy and security.
Tsai, Taiwan's first female president from 2016 to 2024, reiterated that Taiwan's determination to engage with the world remains unshaken. She is currently visiting the United States and plans to return to Taiwan on Sunday.
