Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, will cancel its annual Sports Day amid COVID-19 concerns but will still pay a special bonus of NT$16,000 (US$571) to its non-manager employees for the event.
TSMC said Friday it will distribute NT$752 million in special bonuses to about 47,000 employees based in Taiwan.
It was the second consecutive year that TSMC decided to suspend its annual Sports Day event, and the NT$16,000 bonus to be given to each non-manager employee this year will top the NT$12,000 the chipmaker gave last year.
In addition, TSMC will give an additional NT$2,000 in cash to all of its employees.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, TSMC has still prospered, generating NT$996.54 billion in consolidated sales in the first eight months of 2021.
The chipmaker is expected to report its September sales next week.
TSMC has scheduled an investor conference for Oct. 14 to detail its third quarter results and give guidance for the fourth quarter.
