TV pundit gets 50-day detention for defaming ex-president Ma

Taipei--The Taiwan High Court on Tuesday sentenced TV pundit Clara Chou (???) to criminal detention of 50 days in a defamation case brought against her by former President Ma Ying-jeou (???).

The sentence can be commuted to a fine. The ruling is final and cannot be appealed.

Ma took legal action against Chou after the latter alleged in December 2014 that he and his campaign team had received NT$200 million (US$6.53 million) in secret political donations from the Ting Hsin International Group (????), a conglomerate that was embroiled in a string of food safety scandals in 2013 and 2014.

The Taipei District Court ruled in December 2015 that Chou was not guilty of the charge, but Ma appealed the ruling to the Taiwan High Court.

Chou, a former journalist, hosts a radio talk show in addition to being a political commentator.
