Two Dead in Nantou Head-On Freeway Crash


Nantou: Two people died after a head-on collision between two cars on National Freeway 3 early Saturday morning in Nantou County. The crash occurred at 1:45 a.m. near the 244.5-kilometer southbound mark. The 61-year-old driver, who was allegedly driving the wrong way, was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the National Highway Police Bureau.



According to Focus Taiwan, the 25-year-old driver of the other car was pronounced dead at the scene. Around 1 a.m., police received reports of a car driving northbound in the southbound lanes. Patrol vehicles and maintenance trucks set up stops near the 290K and 250K marks at Zhuqi and Nanyun interchanges, but the driver failed to stop.



The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, the police said. Police reminded drivers that if they realize they are driving the wrong way, they should pull over immediately, turn on hazard lights, place warning triangles, and call 110 or 1968 after reaching a safe location.
