Taipei, Downpours are expected in northern and northeastern Taiwan Friday as Typhoon Trami passes east of Taiwan toward Japan, the Central Weather Bureau said.
The bureau has issued a heavy rain alert for Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Keelung, Yilan and Hsinchu.
As of 2 a.m. Friday, Trami was located 790 kilometers east of Eluanbi on Taiwan's southernmost tip, moving at 13 kilometers per hour in a west-northwest direction, CWB data showed.
Carrying maximum sustained winds of 162 kph and gusts of up to 198 kph, the typhoon is forecast to speed up slightly and begin to turn north toward Japan as it approaches the Miyako Islands, the bureau said.
On Trami's periphery, strong winds of up to 117 kph can be expected across Taiwan and its offshore islands, with high surf in coastal areas, the bureau said.
Meanwhile, daytime temperatures on Friday will range between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius in northern and northeastern Taiwan, and will reach over 30 degrees in the rest of the country, according to the CWB.
