An undocumented Vietnamese migrant worker suspected of driving a car with five passengers in it that hit a female scooter rider on June 2 in Longjing District, Taichung, before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing the scene has been arrested, police said Sunday.
The woman surnamed Chen (?), 27, is currently in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, while three migrant worker passengers from the car have also been arrested, with two still on the run, according to Taichung police.
The undocumented worker driving the car surnamed Nguy?n (?), 24, is suspected of being involved in the hit-and-run after his car collided with Chen’s scooter at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Zhonghua Road. He parked the vehicle at the side of the road about 50 meters from the accident site and fled the scene as did the passengers, the police said.
Nguyen apparently bought the car by using the national identification card of the Vietnamese spouse of a Taiwanese national, according to the police.
Chen’s father said his daughter and her boyfriend who have been dating for more than 10 years originally planned to register their marriage on her birthday, June 23.
However, she is now under observation in the ICU and “still has a long recovery ahead,” her father said, adding that he does not understand how the migrant workers had a car and hopes to secure justice for his daughter.
The driver and five passengers are all undocumented Vietnamese migrant workers who illegally left their legal place of employment in Taiwan. Nguy?n later tested positive for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test, according to the police.
While Nguy?n is under investigation by prosecutors, the other three have been placed at the National Immigration Agency’s Specialized Operation Brigade, the police said.
