UNIVERSIADE: Taiwan strikes gold in badminton, roller sports
Taipei-A day after Yang Chun-han's (???) epic win in the men's 100-meter dash on Thursday, Taiwan managed two more golds and another medal-winning performance in track in field.
Paced by world No. 1 women's singles star Tai Tzu-ying (???), Taiwan won gold in the badminton mixed team event, whitewashing Japan 3-0 in the best-of-five finals with victories by Lee Yang (??) and Lee Jhe-huei (???) in men's doubles, Tai in women's singles, and Wang Tzu-wei (???) in men's singles.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Liang Hsuan-min (???) won the country's ninth roller sports gold medal at the 2017 Universiade after besting fellow Taiwanese Wang Jia-wei (???) in the women's speed slalom final on Friday.
Perhaps the most notable performance of the day, however, came when Taiwanese Hsiang Chun-hsien (???) took bronze in the men's high jump event with a season's best jump of 2.26 meters.
Hsiang was in gold medal position after clearing 2.26 meters, but he failed in three attempts at 2.29 meters, pushing him back to third.
Taiwan's men's and women's table tennis teams played themselves into medal contention but fell in the semifinals of their respective tournaments to win bronze medals.
The men fell to Japan 3-0, while the women lost to South Korea 3-1. With Taiwan down 2-1 in the women's encounter, Cheng I-ching (???) had a chance to send it to a decisive fifth match, but she could not hold on to a two-game lead and lost to Jeon Ji-hee, 9-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-5.
On the final day of the weightlifting competition at the Taipei Universiade, Chen Shih-chieh (???) took silver in the men's +105 kg weight class with a combined lift of 415 kg., 15 kilograms behind gold medalist Gor Minasyan of Armenia.
Chen's medal brought Taiwan's final weightlifting medal haul at these games to seven -- two gold, one silver and four bronze -- that included a remarkable gold-medal performance by Kuo Hsing-chun (???) in the women's 58kg weight class.
Kuo bounced back from a disappointing showing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio to easily defeat the defending Olympic champion in Taipei on Aug. 21 and set a new world record for the weight class in the clean & jerk in the process.
