Vietnamese-Taiwanese couple found dead in separate locations
Taipei-A Vietnamese woman and her Taiwanese husband were recently found dead in Tainan and Chiayi, respectively, but law enforcement authorities are still trying to piece together what happened, Tainan police said Wednesday.
The body of the 37-year-old woman surnamed Nguyen was discovered at the couple's rented home in Tainan by police who broke into the place Dec. 19.
She was found lying on the ground in her bedroom with signs indicating she had been dead for days, police said, noting that there were no signs of an intrusion or clashes.
The preliminary findings of an autopsy performed Tuesday, however, suggested Nguyen may have been choked to death, but a forensic expert said further investigation is needed to determine the actual cause of death.
Police suspect Nguyen's husband, whom she married two years ago and has been identified only by his surname Chen (?), turned up dead near the estuary of the Pachang River in neighboring Chiayi County on Dec. 18.
That suspicion came after Chen's car was found nearby on Dec. 20 with his cellphone in the front passenger seat and no other indication of his whereabouts, police said.
Later on Dec. 20, Chen's family was shown the body but could not confirm it was indeed Chen, and therefore a DNA test will be done to determine its identity, police said.
The police looked into the case after Nguyen's 12-year-old daughter from a previous marriage and the caregiver she lived with during the week reported that there was a foul smell from their house.
The two went there looking for Nguyen and Chen after having been unable to contact them since Dec. 16.
Though police have yet to voice any suspicions of what may have happened, they did say the Vietnamese woman spent time with several friends on Dec. 15 before having an argument with Chen later in the day, according to neighbors.
