Virus attack to affect less than 2% quarterly revenue: TSMC
Taipei, A computer virus attack Friday, involving a variant of the 2017 WannaCry ransomware, will impact third-quarter revenue by less than 2 percent, lower than the 3 percent estimated Sunday, said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) at a press conference Monday.
It is estimated that the virus will cause the gross margin for the third quarter to fall by about 1 percent, the world's largest contract chipmaker added.
The WannaCry virus attack occurred at about 9 p.m. Friday, after which the chipmaker's production lines at three 12-inch wafer plants in the Hsinchu Science Park, the Central Taiwan Science Park and the Southern Taiwan Science Park, were forced to shut down.
The WannaCry virus encrypts files on affected computer systems and demands a ransom to decrypt them.
According to TSMC, the damage was under control within one day.
