Taipei: Taiwan will experience mostly warm weather on Sunday, but a shift to colder and wetter conditions is anticipated next week as a strong continental cold air mass approaches, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). The CWA has indicated that Sunday's weather will be influenced by northeasterly winds, bringing scattered showers to windward areas including the northern coast, Greater Taipei, eastern Taiwan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and northern mountainous regions, while other regions will see mostly cloudy to sunny skies.According to Focus Taiwan, daytime temperatures are expected to reach 22-24 degrees Celsius in northern and eastern Taiwan, and about 25-28 degrees in central and southern regions. However, nighttime temperatures will fall to around 15-16 degrees in central and northern Taiwan and the northeast, with 17-19 degrees elsewhere. The CWA has also issued warnings about strong northeasterly winds affecting coastal areas from Taoyuan to Tainan, Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula, as well as Penghu, Green Island, and Orchid Island, where sustained winds of 41-51 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 63-75 kph are expected.Tropical Storm Nokaen, currently situated east of the Philippines, is forecast to remain over the waters east of the country and poses no direct threat to Taiwan, as stated by the CWA. Starting Monday, weather conditions are expected to become more unsettled as the northeasterly system strengthens and moisture levels increase, raising the likelihood of rain along the northern coast and mountainous areas of Greater Taipei. Brief showers may also occur north of Taoyuan and in eastern Taiwan. The CWA anticipates a strong cold air mass arriving on Tuesday, leading to a sharp decrease in temperatures, particularly in northern Taiwan where conditions will become increasingly wet and cold. Independent meteorologist Wu De-rong has predicted that from Wednesday through Friday, the cold air mass is likely to persist, potentially reaching the level of a "strong continental cold air mass," with Taipei station temperatures dropping below 12 degrees. In low-lying areas, temperatures could fall to around 8 degrees, and snow is possible on mountains above 3,000 meters, such as Hehuanshan and Xueshan, while sleet or rime ice may occur around 2,000 meters. The cold air mass is expected to start weakening next Saturday, leading to a rebound in daytime temperatures, although mornings and evenings will remain cool, Wu added.
