Warmth in the Dark: Anonymous Man Shows Respect to Taipower Workers

Tainan: Despite a power outage that has persisted for over a week following Typhoon Danas, individuals in the community have demonstrated acts of generosity towards Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) workers, including treating them to meals as a token of appreciation for their efforts in restoring power.

According to Focus Taiwan, a man from Tainan anonymously left NT$2,000 (US$68.16) to cover the dinner expenses for six Taipower workers at a beef noodle restaurant in Syuejia District. The local resident who witnessed the event shared the story on Facebook, noting that the man instructed the restaurant owner to "treat the Taipower staff well" with the money, opting to remain unnamed.

The six workers, who began their meal after 9 p.m., were scheduled to continue working until midnight and start again at 6 a.m. the following day. The Facebook post quickly garnered over 9,400 likes within 24 hours, with numerous commenters expressing gratitude towards the Taipower employees.

On Monday, Lo, a Taipower shift leader and one of the six workers whose meal was paid for, shared his experience with CNA. Initially hesitant to accept the gesture, Lo attempted to return the money but was unable to do so as the benefactor had already departed. He noted that while they had previously received drinks or words of encouragement, this was the first occasion where someone had paid for their meal.

This act of kindness was not isolated. Chou Ming-yi, a Taipower official from Kaohsiung stationed in Tainan, remarked on the community's consistent generosity, with residents offering food and drinks daily. Additionally, local residents assisted the workers by guiding them through unfamiliar areas of the city.

In Chiayi County, a bubble tea shop has been providing hundreds of free drinks daily to Taipower staff since Friday. The shop owner, Fang, was inspired by the dedication of Taipower workers from counties such as Taoyuan and Hualien, prompting him to contribute to their efforts.
