An approaching weather front and strengthening southwesterly winds will bring rain to much of Taiwan on Tuesday, including the possibility of extremely heavy downpours in Greater Taipei, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
As the system moves in, occasional showers and thunderstorms are forecast for areas south of Miaoli, while other regions could see isolated and intense thundershowers during the afternoon hours, CWB forecaster Lin Ting-yi (???) told CNA.
Specifically, Lin said, there is a chance of heavy or extremely heavy rain in the Greater Taipei area, as well as heavy rain in mountainous regions and along the east coast.
The CWB defines heavy rain as accumulated rainfall of 80 millimeters or more within a 24-hour period or 40 mm or more in an hour, while extremely heavy rain is accumulated rainfall of 200 mm or more within 24 hours.
In terms of temperatures, daytime highs Tuesday will hit 29-31 degrees Celsius in the north and 33-35 degrees in other regions, while overnight lows will drop to 24-26 degrees nationwide, Lin said.
From Wednesday through the Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend, occasional rain and thundershowers are forecast for central and southern Taiwan, Lin said, while other regions will see cloudy to mostly clear skies.
There is, however, a good chance of afternoon rain or thundershowers during that time in mountainous areas in the north, in Greater Taipei and along the east coast, as well as in lower elevations in the north from June 4-6, Lin said.
Temperatures in the next few days will be 1-2 degrees higher than on Tuesday throughout Taiwan, Lin said.
The CWB is also keeping an eye on the possibility of another plum rain front affecting Taiwan from June 7-10, though such long-term forecasts have a high degree of uncertainty, he said.
