Yilan Hotel Owner Faces Fines Over Rooftop Plastic Bottle Collection

Yilan: The owner of a hotel in Yilan's Jiaoxi Township has been ordered to remove over 1,000 plastic bottles from the rooftop of their building or risk facing fines. This directive comes after neighbors lodged complaints regarding the accumulation of bottles.According to Focus Taiwan, the hotel's owner's elderly mother had been using the sixth-floor rooftop to cultivate vegetables and started collecting plastic bottles to secure fabric over the soil. However, this collection eventually grew significantly, prompting neighbors to report the situation to the county government due to concerns over potential public health and safety risks. In response, the Yilan County government released a statement on Tuesday, indicating that officials from multiple agencies conducted a joint inspection of the rooftop. The inspection revealed violations of the Building Act and Waste Disposal Act. Consequently, the hotel owner was warned to address these issues or face fines ranging from NT$60,000 (US$1,904) to NT$300,000 for the Building Act and NT$1,200 to NT$6,000 for the Waste Disposal Act.Additionally, county officials directed the hotel owner to remove containers of standing water, which could become breeding sites for mosquitoes, and have planned follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with the regulations.
