Taipei: The 2025 Matsu Biennial commenced in Taiwan's Lienchiang County (Matsu Islands), showcasing over 50 artworks and installations by 55 teams from nine countries. The event, running from September 5 to November 16, is hosted by the county government and the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC). Participating artists hail from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, the United States, Spain, and Canada.
According to Focus Taiwan, the biennial's theme, "Pha-Jiu -- Your Sea, My Land," was introduced with a dance performance inspired by a local fishing tradition. This tradition involves driving large wooden stakes, known as "jiu" in Eastern Hokkien, into the seabed to secure fishing nets. A newly launched app provides visitors with commentary on artworks as they approach each exhibit, which Lienchiang County Magistrate Wang Chung-ming described as a significant development in the biennial's history and Matsu's digital evolution.
Now in its third edition, the biennial is part of a 10-year project aimed at transforming Matsu into an "island of art" by the decade's end. GACC Secretary General Lee Hou-ching emphasized the event's importance, likening it to a "bountiful catch" following years of preparation and promised ongoing support from GACC.
