Funeral Company in Hsinchu City Faces Repercussions for Premature Cremation

Hsinchu city: A funeral service company in Hsinchu City is confronting potential penalties from the city government after a body was mistakenly cremated earlier than planned, leading to a confrontation between the bereaved family and the company's representatives, local authorities reported.

According to Focus Taiwan, police were summoned to the Hsinchu City Funeral Parlor Crematorium following an altercation that escalated into physical violence, resulting in injuries to two individuals. Although no official complaints were filed, police cited three people under Article 87 of Taiwan's Social Order Maintenance Act, which imposes fines of up to NT$18,000 (approximately US$590) for fighting.

The incident unfolded when the company cremated a body scheduled for Thursday afternoon in the morning instead. The company reportedly neglected to confirm the body's identity, preventing the family from performing a final farewell, as a witness informed CNA. The company has since issued an apology, reached a compensation agreement with the family, and committed to revising its procedures to prevent similar occurrences.

In a statement, the Hsinchu City Department of Civil Affairs disclosed that the city's Mortuary Services Office mediated the dispute. Both parties agreed that the family would conduct prayer and worship rituals on Thursday, with a memorial service to be scheduled later, while compensation details remain under discussion.

The department also announced plans to investigate the company to identify those responsible for the error and to administer suitable penalties. Additionally, the department aims to collaborate with all private contractors to enhance protocols and avert future mishaps.
