Hualien:The Institute for Information Industry (III), alongside industry partners, has developed an AI-powered technology that transforms old photographs, voice recordings, and family stories into personalized videos for dementia care.According to Focus Taiwan, this innovation, called the "Multimodal Real-time Digital Scene Generation Technology Application Service," was created by the III's Institute of AI Innovation (iAI). It utilizes generative AI to recreate familiar scenes from a patient's life, providing personalized digital content instead of standardized care materials. This technology has undergone a proof-of-concept trial at the Mennonite Christian Hospital's dementia care home in Hualien. It has been employed for reminiscence therapy, cognitive stimulation, and rehabilitation. Carrie Huang, deputy division head at the iAI, emphasized the potential of familiar people, places, and experiences to help trigger memories in dementia patients.Edward Hong, senior strategy director at the iAI, explaine d that the system combines photos, voice recordings, and text descriptions with AI technologies such as semantic analysis, image and video generation, and lip synchronization to craft the personalized digital content. The hospital also monitors patients' brainwave activity during video sessions to refine future content based on observed changes.Additionally, Huang noted that patients wear location-enabled wristbands that allow the system to recognize them as they enter an audiovisual room, where their personalized videos are automatically projected. Feedback from caregivers indicates that patients who viewed the personalized videos exhibited increased willingness to communicate, participate in activities, and engage more actively in rehabilitation.
