Taipei:Eswatini's new ambassador to Taiwan has pledged ongoing support for Taiwan's involvement in international organizations. During a ceremony on Monday where he presented his credentials to President Lai Ching-te, Ambassador Vulindlela Simphiwe Kunene emphasized the importance of Taiwan's contribution to addressing global challenges.
According to Focus Taiwan, Kunene stated that excluding the resources of Taiwan's 23 million people hampers efforts to tackle issues such as pandemics, cybercrime, and supply chain disruptions. He affirmed Eswatini's commitment to advocating for Taiwan's meaningful participation in global forums, describing this stance as a principled position rooted in fairness and effective international cooperation.
Kunene, with prior experience at the United Nations, highlighted the positive impact of Taiwan-backed initiatives like rural electrification in Eswatini, which he said has transformed rural communities. He also expressed intentions to enhance collaboration in various sectors, including trade, renewable energy, and digital transformation.
President Lai welcomed Kunene, noting the enduring friendship between Taiwan and Eswatini over 58 years. Lai reiterated Taiwan's dedication to joint projects such as the Taiwan Industrial Innovation Park and expanded cooperation in multiple fields.
Kunene mentioned that King Mswati III had been invited to Taiwan's Double Ten National Day celebrations, suggesting a possible visit by the king. Previous Taiwan-Eswatini relations gained attention when President Lai's April visit was delayed due to airspace restrictions believed to be influenced by China. The visit occurred in May with the assistance of an aircraft from King Mswati.
