Taipei:The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan (AmCham Taiwan) celebrated its 75th anniversary on Tuesday, emphasizing its commitment to fostering a better business environment and strengthening Taiwan-U.S. relations.
According to Focus Taiwan, nearly 200 guests, including over 20 government officials, attended the event at Taipei's Grand Hotel. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim highlighted AmCham's vital role in addressing issues, proposing solutions, and enhancing collaboration between the government and the business sector. She underscored the growing partnership between Taiwan and the United States, noting, "Our relationship is strong because it is built on shared interests, shared values, and increasingly, shared investments in each other's future."
In a prerecorded message, American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene lauded bilateral economic relations as being in a "golden age," attributing this success largely to AmCham's efforts. He emphasized that AmCham's advocacy has bolstered the U.S. business community in Taiwan while contributing to the island's prosperity and global competitiveness.
AmCham Chairperson Anita Chen reflected on the chamber's achievements over the years, such as initiating its annual Washington advocacy visit known as the Doorknock and producing the Taiwan White Paper in the 1990s. She also mentioned the chamber's support for Taiwan's accession to the World Trade Organization in 2002 and its efforts in reviving Taiwan-U.S. trade and investment discussions. "Now, even on our 75th anniversary, AmCham has no intention of slowing down," Chen stated. "We will continue to advocate vigorously for a better business environment and deeper U.S.-Taiwan relations."
The event, themed "Honoring the Legacy, Empowering the Future," featured a history wall with rare photographs and archival materials showcasing the chamber's progress since its founding in 1951. The Taipei American School's Opus Choir also performed during the celebration.
AmCham Taiwan represents approximately 1,150 members from over 540 companies, offering advocacy, networking, and information-sharing services. Its initiatives, publications, and outreach activities facilitate connections between businesses and government officials in both Taipei and Washington.
